Members of The United Steelworkers Local 7-669 report that they have been locked out of their jobs in a uranium processing plant. Metropolis, where the plant is located, is famous as the home of Superman. It is a small town in rural southern Illinois.

Honeywell, the union reports, has been unwilling to negotiate in good faith, and has replaced locked out union members with SCAB workers. Members of local 7-669 perform extremely difficult jobs. Their work requires high level technical skills and attention to detail. They work with one of the most hazardous substances known, uranium hexaflouride. The union has been very concerned with workplace safety, but it is not clear what efforts were made to protect union busting "contingent workers," commonly known as SCABS.

Now there has apparently been a major leak at the plant. The union has posted a video of the incident.

The North Side Greens are concerned about contamination in nearby communities in southern Illinois and parts of Kentucky. After viewing the Youtube video it is very difficult for the Northside greens to believe a good part of southern Illinois was not contaminated. The Greens would like to know what steps are being taken to prevent crops contaminated by this release from entering the food chain. Uranium is the radioactive core of a nuclear power plant.

It's a safe bet that most citizens of Illinois are not aware that the State permitted construction of a uranium hexaflouride plant in southern Illinois. We doubt they would have approved.
