More Patronage?

Cook County Commissioner Sims, in a recent broadcast on the Cook County Cable Station, is said to have argued the case for patronage.

Patronage is a form of corruption in which jobs in government or private sector are awarded on the basis of political loyalties instead of merit.

Simms was arguing to eliminate the Shakman Decree, a landmark decision which required Chicago, Cook County, and some other governmental units to institute basic political reforms.

The courts found, in the Shakman case, that patronage was unconstitutional. Disclaimer: The North Side Greens do not subscribe to cable television and did not view the broadcast. We received an E-mail from an Oak Lawn resident who happened to be watching Channel 900 when Sims spoke.
